Celebrating Newark's Diversity
The description of The North Ward Center and its place in Newark would be incomplete without describing our unique role in bringing people together to celebrate their different ethnic backgrounds. We owe this tradition to the teachings of our mentor, Monsignor Geno Baroni.
Each January, the center marks “El Dia de los Reyes,” with a festive celebration of the traditional Latin American holiday honoring the Three Kings.
The center commemorates the contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., with an annual ceremony of remembrance and celebration in January.
In March, we host the "Society of Italians who Celebrate St. Patrick's Day." The non-partisan event honors an Italian-American and an Irish-American. Past recipients included Gov. Chris Christie and Gov. Jon Corzine.
In September, the center turns out one of the largest contingents in Puerto Rican Day Parade in Newark.
In September, we also host an annual Puerto Rican Scholarship Dinner, honoring four college-bound North Ward Puerto Rican students who have exhibited academic excellence and triumphed over adversity.
